SUMMERDOWN – Basingstoke, Hampshire, England
The Heritage: In the 1990s, Sir Michael Colman decided to reintroduce traditional Black Mitcham peppermint to English soil. This historic, intensely flavoured crop had been a staple of English agriculture before being largely lost to cheaper imports from the US and Asia. Today, Summerdown cultivates around 100 acres of this rare mint on their regenerative farm in the Hampshire foothills.
The Verdict: Summerdown is a true single-estate producer. Rather than buying processed flavourings, they grow, harvest and distil their pure peppermint oil on-site, on their own farm. This gives them complete oversight of the ingredient from soil to final product. The resulting Black Mitcham oil has a bright, refined character that elevates their chocolate and apothecary ranges above the generic, commercially flavoured alternatives.

MOLTON BROWN - Elsenham, Hertfordshire
The Heritage: Established on South Molton Street, London in 1971, the brand transitioned into luxury bathing products. Despite now being owned by the Kao Corporation, manufacturing remains anchored at their historic Hertfordshire facility.
The Verdict: While it operates on a multinational scale, Molton Brown warrants inclusion for continually investing in its UK production base. It remains a reliable domestic source for premium, vegetarian-friendly bathing fragrances that support UK manufacturing jobs.

CHARLES FARRIS — Mere, England
The Heritage: Founded in Bishopsgate, London in 1845, Charles Farris began as a maker of church candles—a service they still proudly provide to St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey today. Operating from their workshop in Mere, Wiltshire, this historic Royal Warrant holder continues to utilise traditional manufacturing techniques dating back to medieval times.
The Verdict: Charles Farris is the undisputed master of the candle. Without abandoning their rich ecclesiastical heritage, they have perfected the modern luxury scented candle.
