HARRISON SPINKS – Leeds, England
The Heritage: Founded in 1840, Harrison Spinks has evolved from a traditional bedmaker into a remarkable, vertically integrated agricultural and industrial powerhouse. Operating out of Leeds, they take domestic sourcing to an almost unprecedented level by owning and managing a 300-acre farm in North Yorkshire. Here, they rear their own flocks of sheep for wool and cultivate hemp and flax crops to be processed into natural mattress fillings. Furthermore, they are the only bedmaker in the world to draw their own wire from raw steel rods, manufacturing their revolutionary micro-springs entirely in-house.
The Verdict: Harrison Spinks is a pioneer in sustainable, circular manufacturing. They actively combat the ecological harm caused by the disposable foam-made bed industry by refusing to use synthetic foams or chemical fire retardants. One technical triumph is their Cortec™ spring system: rather than gluing pocket springs together (which makes mattresses very difficult to recycle), they seal them using sonic welding. This ensures that at the end of a long lifespan, a Harrison Spinks mattress can be easily deconstructed and the natural fibres composted and the steel springs cleanly melted down. It is a great example of UK engineering and environmental integrity.
Core Products: Luxury pocket-sprung mattresses, traditional upholstered divan bases and bespoke headboards.
