THOR HAMMER COMPANY - Birmingham, England

The Heritage: Founded in 1923, the Thor Hammer Company Ltd has spent a century mastering a highly specific niche: the manufacture of soft-faced hammers and mallets. Operating out of Shirley in Birmingham, this proudly independent, family-run business remains steadfast in its commitment to UK manufacturing. Remarkably, they continue to use historic production methods, such as tightly coiling and pressing water buffalo hide to create their famous rawhide striking faces, operating alongside modern injection-moulding for their synthetic ranges.

The Verdict: Thor Hammer is an absolute staple of UK engineering, automotive restoration and woodworking. Their tools are meticulously engineered to deliver a heavy, controlled blow without damaging, sparking or marking the workpiece. Unlike cheap, disposable rubber mallets, Thor’s classic copper and rawhide hammers are designed for absolute sustainability and serviceability; the striking faces are fully replaceable, meaning the central cast-iron head and wooden handle can easily last a lifetime of professional use.

Core Products: Classic Copper and Rawhide faced hammers, solid brass mallets, nylon replaceable-face hammers and dead-blow hammers.

JOSEPH MARPLES - Sheffield, South Yorskhire, England

The Heritage: Founded in 1840, Joseph Marples (not to be confused with the mass-market "Marples" brand), Joseph Marples is a fifth-generation family firm and one of Sheffield’s oldest surviving joinery tool manufacturers. Originating during a period when several related 'Marples' families operated out of the city, the company has remarkably remained within the exact same family for over 180 years, steered by a continuous succession of sons named Joseph. Today, they continue to operate out of Sheffield, having reintroduced their historic 1891 'Trial 1' corporate mark to signify their finest pieces.

The Verdict: Joseph Marples stands as a beautiful testament to traditional English measuring and marking tools. While mass-market equivalents have shifted almost entirely to moulded plastics and extruded aluminium, Marples continues to handcraft exquisite tools using sustainably sourced Rosewood, European Beech and solid brass. They actively preserve century-old manufacturing traditions - even cutting the exact same wooden threads in their gauges as they did more than a century ago - ensuring that every tool feels beautifully balanced and functions as a true heirloom piece.

Core Products: Traditional Rosewood and Beech mortice gauges, blued-steel try squares, sliding bevels and traditional brass-tipped spirit levels.
