THE STAMFORD NOTEBOOK CO. – Stamford, Lincolnshire, England
STATIONERY
The Heritage: The origins of The Stamford Notebook Co. trace back to the 1950s when Peter Spiegl relocated from London to the Georgian town of Stamford, Lincolnshire, to establish Spiegl Press. Rooted firmly in commercial printing, the company expanded under the guidance of the founder's son, Hugo, who began working the printing press at age thirteen. Drawing on a vast collection of traditional bookbinding equipment, the company launched its notebook division to preserve the art of artisan bookbinding in an increasingly digitised world.
The Verdict: Stamford Notebooks offer a genuinely rigorous approach to everyday stationery. The manufacturing process is kept entirely in-house: the paper is milled in Britain, printed, folded, sewn, trimmed and bound by hand on the Stamford workshop floor. By pairing high-grade, fountain-pen-friendly paper with durable woven cloths, buckram and fine leathers, they produce a practical, beautiful, functional and enduring tool for writers, creatives and people with discerning tastes generally. It’s a precise, quality-driven operation that shows how traditional bookbinding methods generally yield a vastly superior product to the every-present, automated mass-market alternatives.
Core Products: The Classic Woven Cloth Notebook, the vibrant Buckram Journal and bespoke personalised leather journals.
SMYTHSON - New Bond Street, London
The Heritage: Established in 1887 by Frank Smythson, they created the world’s first practical portable diary, the "Panama," in 1908. They hold three Royal Warrants and are famous for their signature "Featherweight" blue paper, which is half the thickness and weight of normal paper yet impervious to fountain pen ink.
The Verdict: The gold standard for stationery. In a digital world, pulling out a Smythson notebook signals a specific kind of appreciation for tactile quality. Their leather cross-grain "Panama" accessories are virtually indestructible.
Core Products: Luxury stationery, leather-bound diaries, notebooks and leather bags/accessories.
ETTINGER - Walsall, England
The Heritage: Founded by Gerry Ettinger in 1934, they are one of the last remaining luxury leather goods companies still manufacturing in the UK. In 1999, they acquired the historic James Homer factory in Walsall - the traditional heart of the UK’s saddlery trade - to ensure their production remained in the UK. They hold a Royal Warrant to HRH The Prince of Wales (now King Charles III).
The Verdict: While famous for their wallets, it’s the leather itself that matters here. They’re specialists in English Bridle Hide - a leather originally used for equestrian gear that’s incredibly durable and improves with age. Their signature "London Tan" (yellow) interiors are an immediate sign of quality to those in the know.
Core Products: Luxury handmade leather wallets, card cases, travel accessories and bags.
ASPINAL OF LONDON - West Sussex, England
The Heritage: Founded on the South Downs, they started as hand-crafters for museum gift shops before expanding into global luxury.
The Verdict: Posh, polished and robust. Their leather goods feel quintessentially English and are built to handle the rigours of travel.
Core Products: Handbags, wallets, travel trunks, leather goods and luxury stationery.
