The Heritage: Founded in 1840, Joseph Marples (not to be confused with the mass-market "Marples" brand), Joseph Marples is a fifth-generation family firm and one of Sheffield’s oldest surviving joinery tool manufacturers. Originating during a period when several related 'Marples' families operated out of the city, the company has remarkably remained within the exact same family for over 180 years, steered by a continuous succession of sons named Joseph. Today, they continue to operate out of Sheffield, having reintroduced their historic 1891 'Trial 1' corporate mark to signify their finest pieces.
The Verdict: Joseph Marples stands as a beautiful testament to traditional English measuring and marking tools. While mass-market equivalents have shifted almost entirely to moulded plastics and extruded aluminium, Marples continues to handcraft exquisite tools using sustainably sourced Rosewood, European Beech and solid brass. They actively preserve century-old manufacturing traditions - even cutting the exact same wooden threads in their gauges as they did more than a century ago - ensuring that every tool feels beautifully balanced and functions as a true heirloom piece.
