&Daughter: The Renaissance of Slow Knitwear

Founded by a father and daughter with a shared reverence for traditional textiles, &Daughter is quietly redefining British and Irish knitwear. In an industry plagued by synthetic blends and outsourced labour, their garments are entirely natural, individually hand-linked in historic rural mills, and designed to be passed down through generations as heirloom pieces.

1. The Heritage

The brand was founded by Buffy Reid and her father, Columba Reid, a veteran with decades of experience in the heritage textile industry. Their mission was born from a mutual frustration: the realisation that the heavy, durable, 100% natural wool sweaters of the past were being replaced by cheap, synthetic-blended fast fashion.

They set out to create the "forever sweater" - garments made the way they used to be, harnessing the unparalleled, multi-generational skills of artisan makers across the UK and Ireland. By championing these small-batch producers, &Daughter actively preserves the endangered craft of traditional hand-linking and fully-fashioned knitting.

2. The Location

Headquartered in London, and avoiding reliance on any single mega-factory, &Daughter operates across the most historically significant textile regions in the UK and Ireland. Their fine-gauge cashmeres and lambswools are crafted in Hawick, the legendary town in the Scottish Borders that has been the global epicenter of luxury knitwear since the 18th century. Their heavier, rugged knits are produced by independent, family-run mills on the West Coast of Ireland. By manufacturing in the exact regions where these textile traditions were born, they ensure the provenance and authenticity of every single stitch.

3. The Difference

  • Zero Synthetics: Unlike the vast majority of modern knitwear, &Daughter strictly forbid the use of nylon, acrylic or polyester in their garments. Every piece is constructed from 100% natural and biodegradable yarns.

  • Fully-Fashioned & Hand-Linked: They do not use the cheap "cut and sew" method. Instead, their garments are knitted specifically to shape (fully-fashioned) to eliminate waste and the seams are painstakingly linked together by hand, resulting in a stronger, flatter and far more durable join.

  • Premium Yarn Sourcing: They partner with world-renowned local spinners, including Todd & Duncan in Kinross, using incredibly high-quality fibres like Geelong lambswool, pure cashmere and authentic Donegal tweed.

  • The Slow Philosophy: Their silhouettes are timeless. As they resist the drumbeat of seasonal micro-trends and instead focus on classic fits, they create garments that remain relevant over decades.

4. The Hero Products

  • The Fintra Rollneck: Their signature heavyweight piece. An oversized, incredibly warm rollneck that acts as the ultimate winter armour, proving that extreme comfort doesn't require sacrificing structural elegance.

  • The Traditional Aran Knit: Crafted in Ireland using traditional cable patterns, these rugged, highly textured sweaters are a visceral reminder of the functional origins of fishermen's knitwear.

  • The Geelong Crew: A sophisticated, everyday staple crafted from superfine lambswool, offering the supreme softness of cashmere with the robust durability of traditional wool.

5. The Essentials

  • Accreditations: 100% natural yarns; strictly manufactured in the UK and Ireland; committed to small-batch, zero-waste production principles.

  • Product Index: Heavyweight wool sweaters, fine-gauge cashmere knits, cardigans, slipovers and natural wool accessories.
