Extract Coffee Roasters: The Art of the Sustainable Roast

Founded in 2007 in a garden shed with a second-hand roaster, Extract Coffee Roasters has grown into one of the UK’s most respected artisan roastery operations. Based in Bristol, they view coffee not as a commodity, but as a craft. By restoring vintage roasting machinery and building direct-trade relationships with farmers, they prove that the finest cup of coffee is one that respects both the land and the maker.”

1. The Heritage

Extract Coffee Roasters began in Bristol with a simple mission: to make coffee better for the people who drink it and the people who grow it. Their "Made in the UK" story is unique because of their dedication to industrial restoration. They famously rescued "Bertha”, a 120kg vintage Probat roaster from 1955, and painstakingly restored her to become the heart of their roastery. We love this commitment to longevity and repair over replacement.

2. The Location

Every bag of coffee is small-batch roasted in St Werburghs, Bristol. Their roastery is a hub of British engineering, where vintage machines work alongside modern precision technology to ensure consistency and quality in every roast.

3. The Difference

  • Direct Trade: They bypass traditional middleman auctions, working directly with farmers to ensure prices paid are significantly above Fairtrade minimums, supporting sustainable livelihoods in the coffee belt.

  • Vintage Restoration: By utilising restored mid-century roasting equipment, they maintain a lower carbon footprint and preserve the industrial soul of traditional coffee roasting.

  • Community Impact: Through their "Grounds Up" collective, they support local Bristol charities and provide barista training to people facing barriers to employment.

  • Small-Batch Precision: Every roast is hand-monitored by skilled roasters who adjust for humidity and temperature to extract the perfect flavour profile.

4. The Hero Products

  • Original Espresso: Their signature award-winning blend. Ethically sourced from cooperatives in Peru and Colombia, it’s roasted to produce a classic, rich chocolate and caramel profile.

  • Dr. Strangelove: A seasonally changing espresso that celebrates the most experimental and unique flavours found in specialty coffee.

  • Single Origin Filters: A curated selection of limited-edition beans that highlight the specific terroir of individual farms, often sourced from long-term partner growers.

5. The Essentials

  • B Corp Certified; Multi-year Great Taste Award Winner.
