Tricker’s: The Oldest Northampton Shoemaker

“Established in 1829, Tricker’s is the oldest shoemaker in Northampton and a definitive choice for rugged, elegant footwear that’s built to withstand a lifetime of use”

1. The Heritage

Tricker’s is a cornerstone of UK shoemaking history. Founded by Joseph Tricker, the company has remained a family-owned business for five generations. They are the inventors of the "Country Boot" - a style designed specifically for the English landed gentry to transition from rugged estate walks to formal dinners. Their commitment to traditional methods is so absolute that they still operate out of the same factory they moved into in 1904.

2. The Location

Their historic manufacturing base is located on St Michael's Road, Northampton, in the heart of the world’s most famous shoemaking district.

3. The Difference

  • Sustainability: Tricker’s is a champion of the circular economy through their renowned factory repair service - because their shoes are Goodyear welted, they can be sent back to the Northampton factory to be entirely rebuilt on the original lasts, significantly extending the product's life and reducing waste.

  • Durability: Often referred to as the tanks of the shoe world, Tricker’s are famously over-built. They use double-leather or heavy-duty Commando soles and high-grade calf leathers that are designed to handle the harshest weather and terrain without failing.

  • Community: As one of the oldest employers in the region, Tricker’s is vital to the Northampton economy. They invest in apprenticeships to ensure that the rare, specialised skills of clicking, closing and lasting are passed down to a new generation of craftspeople.

  • Standards: They hold a Royal Warrant from HM King Charles III - testament to their uncompromising quality and ethical production standards.

4. The Hero Products

  • The 'Stow' Country Boot: The quintessential English brogue boot, featuring a heavy pull tab and a rugged, weather-resistant construction.

  • The 'Bourton' Country Brogue: A heavy-set, iconic shoe that balances traditional country styling with a profile that works in the city.

  • The 'Woodstock' Derby: A clean, classic plain-fronted shoe that showcases the exceptional quality of their leather and craftsmanship.

5. The Essentials

  • Royal Warrant Holder; Member of the Northamptonshire Footwear Manufacturers' Association.
