HUNTER & HYLAND – Leatherhead, Surrey, England
The Heritage: The first records of Richard Hunter and Lambert Hyland crafting drapery hardware in central London date back to 1889. Today, operating from their workshop in Leatherhead, Surrey, the company remains one of the UK’s oldest and most respected manufacturers of bespoke curtain poles, blinds, stair-ropes and rods. tassels and tracks. Their unwavering commitment to traditional domestic craftsmanship is officially recognised by both the Made in Britain marque and a prestigious Royal Warrant.
The Verdict: Hunter & Hyland provides the ultimate bespoke solution across multiple high-end materials: solid brass, sustainably sourced wood and modern acrylic. Their master craftsmen can manufacture a flawless, made-to-measure solution for virtually any architectural challenge, excelling in creating custom-angled and swept poles for complex dormer and bay windows. Their finishing options are extraordinary, offering everything from 14 distinct brass platings to bespoke paint-matching using Farrow & Ball colours as standard.
Core Products: Bespoke made-to-measure curtain poles (ranging from delicate 9mm brass to grand 76mm wooden profiles), custom-bent bay window poles, hand-crafted finials, roman blinds, curtain tassels stair-ropes and rods and heavy-duty motorised or corded drapery tracks.
BARBER WILSONS & CO – Wood Green, London, England
The Heritage: Founded in 1890, Barber Wilsons & Co. (often affectionately known in the trade as Barwil) is the oldest independent water fittings manufacturer in the United Kingdom. Still family-owned and operating out of London, they have steadfastly resisted the industry trend of outsourcing casting and assembly overseas. Their unwavering commitment to traditional UK engineering and quality has earned them a Royal Warrant, having famously supplied Buckingham Palace and the Savoy Hotel, amongst others.
The Verdict: While most competitor contemporary taps are routinely made of cheap alloys with sealed, unrepairable plastic cartridges, Barber Wilsons machines their fittings from heavy, solid brass and, precisely because they are engineered using traditional mechanics (or high-end ceramic discs), they are fully serviceable and designed to last for generations. For restoration projects, they offer their fixtures in raw, unlacquered brass that will naturally tarnish and develop a beautiful, authentic patina over time, alongside classic nickel, chrome and gold.
Core Products: Traditional 1890s crosshead bath and basin pillar taps, exposed thermostatic shower mixers, kitchen bridge mixers and their world famous geometric 1930s 'Mastercraft' Art Deco range.
PERRIN and ROWE – Wolverhampton and The Black Country
The Heritage: Founded in 1978 by Bob Perrin and Greg Rowe, the company began as an engineering partnership in East London before expanding into the industrial heartland of the West Midlands. Today, they are a primary member of the US Group "House of Rohl" and maintain a vertically integrated production model across their UK facilities.
The Verdict: Perrin & Rowe is a maker in the truest sense; they pour molten brass by hand into moulds in their own Black Country foundry rather than using automated mass-casting. This small-batch approach allows for a level of material density and finishing detail that mass-market brands cannot replicate. From a sustainability perspective, their Buy Once philosophy is backed by mechanical engineering: their valves are tested to 500,000 cycles— - quivalent to 25 years of domestic use - and their plating is significantly thicker than industry standards to prevent pitting and wear. Crucially, they maintain a dedicated spares department in the UK, ensuring that internal cartridges or seals can be replaced decades after installation, actively opposing the rip-out-and-replace culture of many modern bathroom renovations.
Core Products: Hand-crafted kitchen mixers, thermostatic showers and traditional bathroom taps.
