LONGTHORNE GUNMAKERS – Northampton, Northamptonshire
The Heritage: Founded by James and Elaine Stewart, Longthorne Gunmakers transitioned from a small Lancashire workshop to a state-of-the-art facility in Northamptonshire’s "Formula One Valley" in 2015. Combining high-precision engineering with traditional gunsmithing, the brand is defined by James Stewart’s revolutionary barrel technology - a feat of mechanical engineering that significantly departs from historic multi-component soldering methods.
The Verdict: Longthorne is the only gunmaker in the world to manufacture "mono-barrels" machined entirely from a single 27kg billet of high-specification steel. As the barrels, ribs and chokes are formed from a single piece of metal, there are no soldered joints to weaken or distort under heat, resulting in a gun that is exceptionally straight and possesses negligible recoil. The method of construction allows barrels to be proofed for Superior Steel Shot up to extra-full choke. Every component is manufactured in-house to aerospace tolerances, with final finishing, walnut stocking and custom engraving executed by local craftsmen to ensure each piece is a bespoke, heirloom-quality tool.
Core Products: The 'Renaissance' Side-by-Side, 'Sporter' and 'Game' Over-and-Under shotguns (available in 12, 16, 20, and 28 gauge), and patented titanium-barreled models.
JOSEPH MARPLES - Sheffield, South Yorskhire, England
The Heritage: Founded in 1840, Joseph Marples (not to be confused with the mass-market "Marples" brand), Joseph Marples is a fifth-generation family firm and one of Sheffield’s oldest surviving joinery tool manufacturers. Originating during a period when several related 'Marples' families operated out of the city, the company has remarkably remained within the exact same family for over 180 years, steered by a continuous succession of sons named Joseph. Today, they continue to operate out of Sheffield, having reintroduced their historic 1891 'Trial 1' corporate mark to signify their finest pieces.
The Verdict: Joseph Marples stands as a beautiful testament to traditional English measuring and marking tools. While mass-market equivalents have shifted almost entirely to moulded plastics and extruded aluminium, Marples continues to handcraft exquisite tools using sustainably sourced Rosewood, European Beech and solid brass. They actively preserve century-old manufacturing traditions - even cutting the exact same wooden threads in their gauges as they did more than a century ago - ensuring that every tool feels beautifully balanced and functions as a true heirloom piece.
Core Products: Traditional Rosewood and Beech mortice gauges, blued-steel try squares, sliding bevels and traditional brass-tipped spirit levels.
HILLBRUSH — Mere, England
The Heritage: Founded in 1922, Hillbrush represents over a century of British wooden brush-making expertise. A proud Royal Warrant holder to His Majesty The King, this family-owned business continues to manufacture their high-end goods from their UK workshop, passing down generational craftsmanship while embracing modern sustainability.
The Verdict: Hillbrush elevates the mundane tools of daily life into objects of true beauty and endurance. Rejecting plastics entirely for their heritage 'Natural' range, their makers select only sustainable, FSC-certified beechwood and centuries-old natural fibres like Tampico, boar bristle, and horsehair. A masterclass in functional elegance for the home.
Core Products: Premium wooden scrubbing brushes, sweeping brooms, clothes brushes, and grooming accessories. URL: https://www.hillbrush.com

HAWS - Smethwick, West Midlands
The Heritage: In 1886, while growing vanilla during his British Colonial Service in Mauritius, John Haws found traditional watering cans to be cumbersome and poorly balanced. Upon returning to London, he patented a completely new, perfectly weighted design. Today, over 140 years later, Haws is the oldest watering can manufacturer in the world. Having survived two World Wars and the 1970s manufacturing recession, the company remains firmly rooted in UK engineering, operating out of a workshop in Smethwick in the West Midlands, England.
The Verdict: A Haws watering can is often described as the Rolls-Royce of gardening tools and they are the ultimate antidote to cheap, split-prone plastic garden-centre cans from the Far East. The sheer brilliance of John Haws’ original design lies in its balance: whether the can is completely full or nearly empty, it remains perfectly weighted in the hand, eliminating wrist strain. Every premium metal watering can undergoes a rigorous manufacturing process. They are hand-soldered, pressure-tested for leaks and finished with their signature brass "rose". This rose delivers a remarkably gentle, rain-like spray that prevents delicate seedlings from being washed away. Crafted from solid copper or heavy-gauge galvanized steel and other quality materials, a Haws can is a true heirloom tool designed to outlive the gardener who buys it.
Core Products: The traditional solid copper indoor watering cans (which develop a beautiful natural patina over time), the heavy-duty galvanized steel outdoor cans and their signature fine brass watering roses.
FOOTPRINT TOOLS - Sheffield, England
The Heritage: Founded in 1875 by Thomas R. Ellin, this brand is a cornerstone of Sheffield's industrial identity, remaining in the same owning family since 1948.
The Verdict: Industrial survival at its finest. In a market flooded with cheap imports, Footprint remains one of the few places where you can still find a professional-grade chisel forged and finished on UK soil.
Core Products: Professional building tools including cold chisels, line pins, bolsters and the iconic Footprint pipe wrench.
DERWENT (CUMBERLAND PENCIL COMPANY) – Workington, Cumbria
The Heritage: Pencil manufacturing in the Lake District dates back to the 1500s following the discovery of high-purity graphite in the Borrowdale Valley. While the industry peaked with thirteen manufacturers in Keswick, Derwent is the only survivor. In 2008, the company moved from its original 170-year-old site to a modern, super-efficient factory in Workington to ensure they could meet contemporary environmental and quality standards while remaining in Cumbria.
The Verdict: Derwent is a premier example of industrial resiliance. They hold the ISO 14001 environmental management certification and have implemented a solvent-free paint application system that has significantly improved factory air quality. Their sustainability credentials include a closed-loop heating system where waste sawdust from the pencil-making process is repurposed to heat the factory and offices during winter. Unlike budget imports, which often use low-grade cedar or synthetic binders that lead to frequent lead breakage, Derwent utilises sustainably sourced Californian Incense Cedar - accredited by the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) - which provides a stable, easy-to-sharpen casing. This structural integrity ensures the pencils last longer and produce less waste, making them a significantly more sustainable choice for professional artists and students alike.
Core Products: Professional artist pencils, including the Lightfast, Inktense and Graphic ranges.
DMM INTERNATIONAL – Llanberis and Caernarfon, Wales
The Heritage: Founded in 1981 in Bethesda, DMM has grown into the UK’s sole manufacturer of climbing hardware. Operating from a vertically integrated facility in the shadows of Snowdonia, the company performs every stage of production - from initial hot-forging and CNC machining to final heat treatment and laser-marking - all entirely within North Wales.
The Verdict: DMM is a global benchmark for safety-critical engineering, where material integrity is the primary design driver. Unlike standard hardware that relies on cast components, DMM utilises a sophisticated hot-forging process that aligns the grain structure of the aluminium or steel, resulting in a lighter and significantly more resilient product. Their sustainability credentials are built on extreme product longevity and a circular service model; for instance they offer a professional re-slinging and servicing program for their mechanical camming devices, ensuring that hardware remains in service for decades rather than being replaced. By manufacturing in Wales, they maintain local quality control and a transparent supply chain that avoids the environmental costs of international transport. Every piece of hardware is individualised with a unique serial number, ensuring lifelong traceability and accountability.
Core Products: Hot-forged carabiners, pulleys, harnesses, ropes, backpacks, ice axes and mechanical cams.
CROWN HAND TOOLS – Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England
The Heritage: Operating out of Darnall in Sheffield, Crown Hand Tools is a family-owned manufacturer that has been crafting premium woodworking tools for over five decades. Proudly bearing the historic "Made in Sheffield" mark, they actively sustain the city’s world-renowned legacy of steel and edge-tool production. Their master craftsmen continue to hand-forge, temper and grind tools using traditional techniques which ensure that old Sheffield toolmaking skills remain firmly rooted in the local economy rather than being lost to overseas mass-manufacturing.
The Verdict: Crown represents a brilliant equilibrium between historic craftsmanship and modern engineering. Whilst their manual forging processes respect centuries of tradition, they also deliberately incorporate advanced modern processes, such as cryogenics and powder metallurgy, to dramatically enhance the performance and edge retention of their steel. They offer an uncompromising alternative to disposable industrial hardware, guaranteeing every single tool against faulty materials and workmanship. For woodturners and carpenters - or just a keen DIY-enthusiast or hobbyist - seeking beautifully balanced, highly durable tools, Crown remains a globally respected standard.
Core Products: Traditional woodturning and woodcarving tools, brass and rosewood marking and measuring tools, cabinet scrapers and handcrafted chisels.
